Norfolk Southern’s Chicago delays could cause challenges for Deere, Ikea

A backlog at Norfolk Southern’s Chicago railyard is reportedly causing shipping delays at U.S. east coast ports. Average daily railcar counts at Norfolk Southern’s Calumet Yard in Chicago increased 19.7% sequentially in the four weeks to March 31 versus a 3.8% decline for all yards in the city. Norfolk Southern’s network connects to six major east coast seaports, including Newark / New York and Baltimore, with major cities including Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Detroit and Chicago. Total U.S. seaborne imports arriving at Newark / New York and Baltimore and headed to those four cities were equivalent to 363,350 TEUs in 2020 with shipments having expanded by 13.8% year over year in Q1’21. The rail delays will be a challenge for both industrial and consumer supply chains. Shipments on the routings linked to Deere & Co. have climbed by 40.4% year over year in Q1’21 while those linked to Ikea rose by 5.3%.

Levi Strauss cuts straight through logistics challenges, hikes prices

Levi Strauss reported FQ1’22 (to Feb. 28) revenues which fell by 13.3% year over year due to pandemic-related store closures. Analysts had expected revenues to fall by 17.3% while Panjiva’s data shows U.S. seaborne imports linked to the firm fell by 6.9% over the same period. The firm may be expecting a return to growth with shipments up by 17.8% year over year in March. The firm’s CEO, Harmit Singh, has noted the firm is “seeing inflationary pressures” but the firm has locked in its costs for this year and “we’ll offset any inflation we see in ’22 with pricing”. Other denim importers to the U.S. will face similar elevated costs for cotton and freight with total U.S. seaborne imports of denim up by 31.2% year over year in March with the Q1’21 total up by 3.3%. The expansion was led by imports associated with V.F. Corp which grew by 278% while those linked to True Religion increased by 23.9%.

Constellation Brands set to push supply chain inflation into beer prices

Constellation Brands reported FQ4’21 (to Feb. 28) revenues which included a 32.9% slump in wine sales and a 15.9% jump in beer sales as a result of changing tastes during the pandemic. The firm does not appear to be expecting a recovery in wines, with U.S. seaborne imports linked to the firm down by 28.0% year over year in March after sliding 35.9% lower in the three months to Feb. 28. THe growth in beer meanwhile has come at the expense of “increased logistics costs predominantly resulted from strategic actions taken to expedite beer shipments” according to CFO Gavin Hankinson. Price increases may occur in the coming months to offset inflationary pressures “largely related to glass and other packaging materials, raw materials, transportation and labor costs in Mexico”. Exports of beer from Mexico linked to Constellation Brands rose by just 1.2% year over year in February, suggesting sales growth may slow, while shipments linked to AB InBev climbed 37.4% higher.

Posco, Thyssenkrupp may be preparing for an elusive tariff cut

U.S. section 232 import duties, applied for national security reasons, have “helped save American jobs in steel and aluminum industries” according to U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. There will continue to be “a place for tariffs” going forward, even though that likely will continue to cause frictions with allies including the EU, Japan and South Korea. The tariffs have not yet succeeded in their primary aim of pushing steel capacity utilization in the U.S. over 80%. As of February 2021 the utilization rate was still just 75.8%. The tariffs have succeeded, however, in cutting imports with shipments in the three months to Feb. 28 down by 18.9% compared to the same period of 2017. Shipments from the EU and South Korea fell by 21.9% and 15.4% respectively while those from Canada and Mexico have increased after they received an exemption as part of the USMCA deal. There is some evidence that companies are preparing for a removal of duties. Total U.S. seaborne imports of steel and aluminum covered by the duties increased by 16.9% year over year in March to their highest since July 2019. Shipments linked to Posco rose by 55.8% while those associated with Thyssenkrupp rose by 36.3% year over year.
